Calcium: The New Weight Loss Supplement?

More and more research on calcium is showing similar results: Calcium
does a body good. Maybe “calcium” should have replaced “milk”
in the popular milk ads of the past. Recent research has shown that calcium
may inhibit weight gain and fat regain.
One new study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that a higher
intake of calcium in the diet may hinder weight increase in the body.
In this study, subjects were divided into two groups, one of which was
provided a high-calcium, restricted energy diet for six weeks. At the
end of that time, those who consumed a high-calcium diet had decreases
in fatty acid production and reduced fat regain. The researchers concluded
high calcium diets elicit a shift in energy partitioning and reduction
        of weight.
This is very important news because many people cut milk and milk products
from their diets to lose weight. The research is showing that cutting
calcium from the diet is not only a mistake for your bones, blood pressure
and overall health (which nutrition experts have been saying for years),
it may also make weight loss more difficult. The reason for the relationship
is not yet known, but more research is underway to fully understand why
calcium seems to support effective weight loss.
